ABSTRACT

The notion of language brokering being an area of competence is also consistent with G. Valdes’s view that language brokering may be a form of giftedness. These ideas that language brokering is a competency or a form of giftedness present a stance that is asset-based and strengths-based in examining ethnic minority, immigrant children. The increase in research on language brokering has offered unique insights into a commonplace phenomenon among immigrant families. The quality of parent-child relationships may play a role in outcome of language brokering activities. The feedback pattern of how parents respond to the child about language brokering may shape the child’s subjective experience in doing so. The model represents how antecedents may shape potential outcomes given the multifaceted and contextually based nature of language brokering. Measurement of language brokering continues to be challenging in advancing the field of study. Very little research on language brokering has been experimental or in a controlled setting.
