ABSTRACT

This chapter details the building user and the groups and individuals who might 'participate' in the design, and the manner in which this may be facilitated by the advent of smart cities. The opportunity but also the need to recognise the potential for the use of smart technology in cities, and in architecture, emerged in recent years. Laser scanning technology has reduced in price so significantly in the past five years that its use to support conceptual design, to record construction as it develops, and to provide a permanent record of buildings and sites, becomes pervasive. Likewise, the cost of immersive technology has reached a low enough price point that its use in computer gaming has certainly overtaken its use as part of professional architecture and engineering.
