ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Mexico and Mexico City as they have been influenced by globalization. Transnational enterprises from several nations are vying to control the communications industry in Mexico. This sector is a major component of the globalization of the Mexican economy but at the same time is going to be a source of conflict over its control - within Mexico and at the international level. A base of world-class production exists in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, and in some locations along the US-Mexico border. The importance of foreign relationships to Mexico are underscored by recalling that many of the top 500 enterprises in Mexico are US corporations, some of them having as large a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) than the entire country of Mexico. Unless economic devastation occurs, economic influence by major US corporations will grow substantially in the future.
