ABSTRACT
The concept that replaced “climate prediction” in official Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)-speak is “climate projection”, a term originating in the field of optics and invoking the idea of a light beam. This chapter utilizes image-historical and art-historical methods to critically examine precisely what kind of image of the future is scientifically constructed in the charts published by the IPCC. In particular, in the reports of the IPCC, red maps and curves show what is known about the earth’s future climate based on scientific knowledge. The analysis of the examples is designed to show how, when examining scientific images, the possible futures of the earth can be shown globally and how already existing future narratives are evoked. The futuristic image type—one that illustrates possible futures in the form of a triptych—was originally developed for the purpose of depicting religious devotional images.
