ABSTRACT

Non-government organizations (NGO) represent voluntary people’s organizations who have developed a special expertise in fields of United Nations’ interest. The NGO Committee on Disarmament has developed expertise on weapons, their cost and presence, and fine points of verification, and is continually prodding governments to begin the process of disarmament. World Federation of United Nations Associations was created by the late John Ennals of the United kingdom and Jan Masaryk of Czechoslovakia. Its current president is the Canadian businessman, Maurice Strong, Director-General of both the Stockholm and Brazil Conferences on the Environment. A country’s United Nations Associations can have a strong voice with its own government and within the United Nations system. Members of its Council of Organizations can be heard in the chambers of Economic and Social Council, and through the Department of Public Information, increasingly sensitive to public opinion.
