ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the events at the University of Innsbruck in spring 1848, and focuses on the aftermath and the impact of these events on the students, as well as on the culture of the university. Most of the revolution of 1848 caused a sudden politicisation of the students, which resulted in an increasing number of political statements from them. Dr. Joseph Hundegger's remarks are representative of the altered political sentiments among the students and their loyal attitude did not go unnoticed among military authorities and members of the imperial family. Political statements often referred to the growing national problems of the Habsburg Empire. The University of Innsbruck was a place where German-speaking and Italian-speaking students had met since its foundation in the late seventeenth century. Students' behaviour during the revolution of 1848 influenced the debate on the reform of Austrian universities. One of the students' demands was a fundamental reform of the Austrian education system.
