ABSTRACT

The area of queerness in games is a burgeoning field of study, with many papers and books being published on the topic in recent years, but the majority of in-game representation and supporting research still focuses on these same representations of lesbians and gay men. However, cross-dressing can serve purposes unrelated to sexuality in games as well, despite being a practice commonly associated with 'queerness'. The erasure of identities is not evident only in the games community-it is also present within texts themselves. In some instances, erasure of queer identities in games is deliberate and explicit. By creating the option for players to experience same-sex relationships, players are able to introduce queerness into the game if they choose to but can still have limited exposure to same-sex couples if they'd prefer a heterosexual experience. Player sexuality relates to the larger issue of texts relying on internal and imagined storylines created by the player to include queer representations.
