ABSTRACT

This chapter provides much attention to the political realm and focuses on the theoretical implications of the discovery of the category itself and the debates around it. It deals with the concept and develops the social construction of gender and explores how this social construction is incorporated and examines the notion of gender to that of class. The chapter summarizes important aspects of contemporary debates about the concept of gender. The category of gender has been closely associated with that of inequality right from the start. Gender is a relational concept that considers the relations of power between men and women and indicates that the roles and subjective attitudes are both social constructions. The socialization process into gender roles begins at birth: families usually treat newborns differently according to their sex. Gender studies have contributed to our understanding of inequality on many levels.
