ABSTRACT

K. J. Dover, the author of a landmark study on homosexuality in ancient Greece, commented on the fragment from Aeschylus, drawing parallels with Pindar and his version of the myth of Tantalus and Pelops. According to the summary by Proclus, both the Cypria and the Little Iliad referred to Achilles' time on Skyros. Throughout the various literary and iconographic versions of the Achilles on Skyros episode, there is frequent confusion between gender and sex. There is one episode in Achilles' life that is not mentioned in the Iliad or the Odyssey but was nevertheless well known from other sources of Greek literature and the Latin tradition in both literature and iconography. Well versed in the idea of friendship in ancient Greece, David Konstan is among those who disagree with the idea that Achilles and Patroclus were united not only by friendship but also by love.
