ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book are structured around three themes of prison experience they are as follows: Impacts of prison culture and environment on prisoners and staff in terms of stigma, personal identity and social interactions; and the experience of pains of imprisonment and how prisoners cope with these. The challenges posed at the boundaries of the institution, including relationships between prisoners and their families, release processes from prison and resettlement in the community. Open any textbook on marketing or business and someone can understand that the success of any institution is dependent upon the relationship of the people within in it to each other and to the institution, as well as to their customers or clients. The book within each part is based on empirical research conducted in one or more countries, within one or more institutions.
