ABSTRACT

For every Korean noun N a corresponding verb can be made meaning to be (an) N. Such a generated verb is formed by attaching -쿴다 to the noun if it ends in a consonant and -쿴다 or -다 to the noun if it ends in a vowel. There is also a negative version of the verb generator, 아니다 – not to be (an) N, with somewhat different properties. Examples of the use of -(쿴)다 and 아니다 are:

왕쿴다 - to be a/the king, from 왕 – a king

새다/새쿴다 - to be a bird, from 새 – a bird

왕쿴 아니다 - not to be a/the king

새가 아니다 - not to be a bird.
