This chapter discusses on the genesis of a story in the screenplay. It suggests to look outwardly to newspapers, magazine articles, current events, opinion pieces, novels, non-fiction, short stories, music, paintings, photographs, graffiti, comic books, posters, want ads for an idea for the screen story. Storytellers must be able to see the story in everything. Before deciding the story one have to be aware that there are legal issues involved. The writer have to check out the "rights issues", that is the legal right to use a story without paying anyone for that right. Literary work is protected by copyright. People's life stories are also legally protected. "Public domain" refers to a piece of literature that is not protected by copyright and is thus available to be adapted by any and all. The chapter also discusses on the genres of a story. Stories are often placed in one of two categories: high concept and low concept.
