ABSTRACT

18Genetic and developmental implications for trace metal metabolism have come about relatively recently. They could be recognized only after nutritionists had established the essentiality and role of particular trace metals in certain developmental and/or physiological phenomena. Nutritionists were first to recognize strain differences in trace metal requirements. As syndromes of dietary trace metal deficiencies were described, clinicians and geneticists could begin to recognize major genetic disorders in relation to trace metal metabolism. The extent to which this has progressed is amply illustrated in the rest of these volumes.
