ABSTRACT

In this chapter we will look at the four noun cases that are used in German. They underpin a lot of deictic relationships in German (how words relate/refer to other words) and you will need to pay close attention to this chapter to make sense of many texts, especially complex academic and literary texts. This chapter builds up progressively. First, the logic behind the case system and each case is looked at. The exercises in each section build on the previous section and will include those cases as well. It is therefore recommended that you work through this chapter in a linear way and only proceed to the next section once you have completed all exercises for each section.
