ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at installing the Steam client, the Steam virtual reality (SteamVR) additional download, and then open Unity to see how easy it is to get the SteamVR Software Development Kit up and running in a basic project. Traditionally used for purchasing and installing games, Steam has grown to feature all kinds of software and now VR libraries and apps. It is necessary to download the Steam client first, to be able to install SteamVR and all the games and software SteamVR requires. The SteamVR status window shows connected devices as well as their status. To use SteamVR as a developer, game designer need the Steam client software and SteamVR running. The SteamVR team have done an excellent job in automating the setup for Unity. As SteamVR is set up, two new folders will appear in the Project panel: Plugins and SteamVR.
