Inconfrontingthefactthatsomethingexistsinsteadofnothing,weconfrontsomething odd.Itremainsoddafterwehavedealtwithitintellectuallyandemotionally,even afterwehaveobtainedasatisfactoryexplanation.Nomatterhowweapproachit,this isthekindoffactwhichliesatthelimitsofourunderstanding.Ratherthanadding anythingtoourtechnicalmastery,itsitsthere,incongruousandobstinate.Itis,ina sense,analienfact.Itisinhuman,foritdoesnotsubmittohumancomprehensionas anordinaryfactwould.Insteaditservesusonlyasanobjectofcontemplation.The worlddoesnotexistforthesakeofhumanity.Ratherweexistasoutpouringsofit.
