In this chapter the author presents her experiences as a psychologist. The author had personally experienced the ever-presence of human variability. Even among the peoples of the Western countries where she had lived, differences were noticeable. The author's bilingual clients were switching languages in the course of the therapy hour and changing topics and mood with these language switches. Women from different Latin American countries were talking about the influence of their cultural background in their expression of gender and sexuality. Immigrant women were talking about the losses and gains brought about by the acculturation process. The beginning feminist perspective on psychological theory that provided her with an intellectual home presented the usual Anglo, white, middle-class, heterosexual, mainstream perspective that characterizes American psychology. Through a web of psychotherapy practice, teaching, consulting, and research, the author has tried to explore and give voice and witness to the experiences of women from different cultural backgrounds and life paths.
