ABSTRACT

Andrew Kirk has made the most significant contribution in the last 30 years from a British evangelical perspective to a critical engagement with Liberation Theology (LT). Andrew sought to interpret LT to a conservative evangelical audience suspicious of the undermining of biblical authority in the liberation hermeneutic. Andrew became aware of the importance of the central question of how theology should be done in a context of poverty, violence and exploitation and he challenged the evangelical world to take LT seriously. LT has certainly diversified, although there have always been liberation theologies (plural) rather than a monolithic movement. There is still plenty of LT being written and taught in Latin America (LA) on a wide range of issues, even if much remains in its indigenous languages. LT can be seen as a product of that period of revolutionary fervour, whereas now the prevailing mood is more inclined to disillusionment and postmodern cynicism.
