ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the processes and mechanisms, the general principles at work in McDonaldization, Disneyfication, and the Starbucks Effect. The four features of McDonaldization that Ritzer identified, there are four key features of Disneyization for Bryman. These features or trends are: theming, dedifferentiation of consumption, merchandising, and emotional labour. 'McDisneyfication', more fully describes what is meant by the term, sketching out its relationship to Ritzer's concept of 'McDonaldization' but also Alan Bryman's term 'Disneyization'. It examines the tensions and interactions of both local consumption and global production within our everyday experience. Localized consumption might involve consumers actively seeking more sustainable alternatives to globalized supply chains and factory farming. Glocalization is obviously a term that combines 'globalization' with 'localization', and is used to emphasize the fact that the globalization of a product or service is more likely to succeed if an attempt at adaptation to the local culture is made.
