The fact that Judaism was and is based upon the belief in two manifestations of God's law, one written and one oral, did not, diminish the importance of the written, biblical laws. The fact that even within its own world and society the Hebrew Bible did not provide anything like comprehensive guidance on how to conduct daily life will make our presumed reader pause for thought. In today's world the demands of modern living create problems for observant Jews, especially in regard to keeping the Sabbath. This chapter focuses on Jewish insights has been to note some aspects of the use of the Bible in a tradition that takes the observance of biblical commandments much more seriously than in Christianity. Even though the Christian understanding and use of the part of the Bible that is common to both faiths has diverged considerably from Jewish understanding, there is much that Christians can learn from Jews in this area.
