Hallé’s career in his fifties and beyond takes on a pattern of regularity and steadilyincreasing eminence, from which one can isolate only highlights. But, as the 1870s began, there were signs of the birth of new institutions in Manchester music making.Hallé’s concerts, too, were a Manchester institution, but the new ventures had an effect on his and his musicians’ activities.
