ABSTRACT

Welcome to tourism under late modern capitalism in the Anthropocene. The starting point for this chapter is that there are deeply ambiguous tensions between tourism under the extractive practices of late modern capitalism and the sustainability challenge represented by the Anthropocene. This chapter aims to engage in a more complex, critical, theoretically curious, and interdisciplinary discussion about tourism, governance, and resilience than characterizes the extant literature. It seeks to challenge readers’ assumptions and excavate meanings underpinning commonly used terms such as sustainability, tourism, resilience, and governance with the intent of provoking deeper thinking, and challenging embedded ways of thinking about these key concepts.
