ABSTRACT

Across Australia, many healthcare facilities provide transition-to-practice programs for new graduate nurses entering the workforce for the first time. Enrolling in a transition-to-practice program, although encouraged, is not compulsory. Moreover, competition for transition programs is often fierce, with more applicants than positions available. If people don’t gain entry to a transition program there are other options. This chapter provides guidance on how to apply for a job and preparation for interview. Potential employers begin to assess their suitability as a candidate from the moment they look at their curriculum vitae (CV) or cover letter. It is important to provide evidence of the above attributes in their cover letter and CV. The cover letter is the first opportunity to make a positive impression on their potential employer, and a personalised letter notifies the reader that people are serious about the application. Appropriate attire is important for making the correct impression as a competent professional.
