ABSTRACT

Psychosocially, Fred's concerns centered around his family and the methadone program. His wife and two small children were present during the admission. His wife, Margaret, said she had been tested for HIV and was negative. Therefore, we knew that their two children, ages five and seven, were also negative. Although it was not apparent on this initial visit, it soon became clear that Margaret, too, had problems with chemical and alcohol use. Fred was looking for daily transportation to the methadone program, but he particularly had a problem getting there on weekends. He said that, although he wanted to attend regularly, he found the daily trip overwhelming.
