ABSTRACT

You can use this activity to introduce a specific issue by relating all the statements to that particular theme. You can develop the activity by getting one side to try to persuade the other to agree with them (and thus move their position physically along the line). You can also ask students to write their own statements, taking turns to read them out. They can discuss what makes a good statement to use in an exercise like this. The statement which caused the greatest discussion can be used to illustrate how a more formal debate is staged. This statement can be taken as the motion, with a chair and speakers for and against the motion, and comments taken from the floor.
