In the early 1980s Germans worried that their famous Black Forest was dying. Media headlines screamed out: ‘The German Forest is on its Deathbed’, ‘Death Hovers over the Sick Forests’. One newspaper, Esslinger Zeitung, even pleaded with its readership: ‘Do our pine trees have to die?’
