ABSTRACT

An article by D. MacKenzie focusing on the emergence of the ‘green consumed indicates that industry has, to date, been less than successful in its promotion of itself as ‘green’. The report of the Ecologically Sustainable Development Working Group on Manufacturing highlights the tendency for industry to fall short of its ‘green’ objectives. According to the Department of Small Business, “publication of the Green Directory is consistent with the Victorian Government’s Conservation Strategy and in particular with the Government’s goals of ensuring sustainable use of renewable resources, the wise use of non-renewable resources, maintaining essential ecological processes, preserving genetic diversity, and protecting natural resources”. The degree to which the post-industrial paradigm has become dominant is open to debate. Tony Leighton agrees with the notion of a paradigm shift, describing it as the opening of a gate through which the world rushes.
