ABSTRACT

The importance of close attachments and healthy relationships cannot be underestimated, and many studies have shown that developing strong bonds with others can mitigate the effects of loss and trauma. In this chapter, attachment theory and the neurological basis for this connection, as they have been described in recent neurobiological research, will be summarized within the grief context. Educators working with grieving children have a unique role to play in the bereavement process. Close enough to have influence but separate enough to have objectivity, teachers can provide guidance and stability to a child who has experienced a loss. They can also serve as role models, demonstrating productive coping skills. This chapter will emphasize the impact of the teacher’s role and provide support in navigating a stormy path.
