ABSTRACT

Development of the groundwater resources involves planning for the entire aquifer. The management objectives for developing and operating the aquifer consider geologic and hydrologic, economic, legal, political, and financial aspects. Several technical tools and techniques that are classified as simulation, optimization, and economic analysis are utilized for the groundwater planning and management. The chapter presents some case studies on the groundwater planning and management using simulation and optimization techniques. It introduces some conceptual models used for the groundwater simulation. The optimal water supply to the municipal, industrial, and agricultural water demands considering the physical, socio-economic, and environmental constraints is the major objective of the groundwater planning and management. Optimal policies for the groundwater operation such as the optimal extraction, allocation, and optimal recharge of the aquifer can be determined using the groundwater operation model considering the physical, environmental, and socio-economic constraints.
