ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a five-week collage-making group for mothers of young children. The foundation of the collage is based on my clinical experiences and the literature on narrative, psychoanalysis, and attachment therapy. Mothers of young children face high rates of stress and depression – particularly mothers who live in underserved and marginalized communities. Furthermore, mothers often lack access to therapeutic services that differ from the traditional one-to-one talk therapy format. This traditional format has therapeutic limitations, especially for communities with collective cultural practices. Therefore, this chapter proposes that an art-making therapy group can be beneficial for mothers from underserved communities.
