ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an important foundation of learning that can be built on over time. The medical model is based on a conception of behavior as something from within the individual, as if the “symptoms” are arising from an underlying pathology. Group work is a long-established therapeutic method used with a variety of people, and not just in the mental health field. Families are also groups, of course, and so it is worth considering what role the family context can play in making a positive difference in relation to mental health problems. The issue of family impact and family support needs is therefore one that is worthy of much fuller attention. Families can provide moral and practical support and can also be very helpful in reinforcing helpful messages professionals are trying to out across.
