ABSTRACT

Group therapy has many beneficial components, which serve well to be enhanced by the concepts of Respect-Focused Therapy (RFT). Using RFT, the therapist offers the first stage of respect by genuinely welcoming each person into the group and demonstrating ways of showing true respect for every person in the room, equally and fairly. This chapter looks closer at the dynamics of group therapy and how those dynamics can be strengthened and supported by RFT. One of the key components or goals of any group process is to encourage and render the outcome of improved self-regard for each member of the group. Likewise, RFT aims for similar results by replacing disrespect for oneself with a greater sense of grounded respect, building a sense of internal care and concern with the support of the group. Accordingly, L. Green and M. J. Stiers discuss multiculturalism that exists within the group dynamic and process.
