ABSTRACT

This chapter includes suggested practices for working with groups of young people, in which individual members may be trans or gender expansive, as well as groups developed explicitly for trans and gender expansive young people. Young group members who are trans or gender expansive may be especially vulnerable to gender-based stereotypes, which may be held and expressed by group members and facilitators. The following exercise represents one avenue that facilitators may take toward eliminating gender-based stereotypes, and cultivating a group culture that may be more welcoming of trans and gender expansive members. This activity may be best suited to the early stages of the group. However, it may also be useful later in the group's development, especially if gender-based biased stereotypes have been expressed by group members. Trans and gender expansive youth report feeling isolated at school and home, and may be vulnerable to feeling misunderstood or isolated in a given group context.
