ABSTRACT
This chapter reports the results of a survey about sexual harassment with college students in the city of Guangzhou, China. The chapter introduces some basic information about the sample (402 students in two universities) and some empirical findings. Only 22% of those experiencing sexual violence while in transit reported it to the authorities. As many as 38% of bus riders had experienced sexual violence as compared to 21% of subway riders, and bus riders felt less safe at night than those traveling by subway, especially if they had to wait at the bus stop during nighttime. The most common precaution by women was ‘dressing in a certain way’ or waiting for buses only at well-lit places. The chapter briefly summarizes the main findings from the case study and makes suggestions for research and practice.
