ABSTRACT

The person is now engaged in the agreed action. They may need to free themselves from previous thought patterns, control their environment, keep track of and acknowledge their progress, and reward themselves. They will need to anticipate problems, revisit some steps, change approaches, and identify and use support. As part of the process of motivating someone to change and helping them put together an action plan, some skills deficits may be identified that need to be overcome to ensure the plan is successful. How this will be achieved is an essential part of the plan, in order to avoid failure. This need for skills development may be met in different ways – for example, by the person attending an education class or a group in a day centre or other setting. If this is not possible, and one has the knowledge and skills to do so, one may need to put together a teaching programme to meet the need.
