ABSTRACT
Chapter 8 offers an overview of the post-independence history of handloom weaving until India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s. The chapter claims that post-independence policy on the textile crafts built upon a misreading of the dominant tendency in the industry – a consolidation of capitalism – leading to distortions in government intervention and unintended consequences.
