ABSTRACT

Musicians' and labels' attitudes towards piracy vary, but piracy's implications are ambiguous for more reasons. It offers consumers access to a broad range of music and resources that formerly were not accessible and it can have a positive impact on media literacy. On the other hand, questions of sustainability arise. It remains to be seen how certain genres and musicians themselves are affected by these changes. To sum it up, in the Philippines, a weak economic situation and a weak juridical system go hand in hand and contribute to the persistence of piracy. The Philippine recording industry claims that it has been severely affected by piracy, as is described by Danny Yson on the website of the Philippine Association of the Record Industry (PARI): 'The Philippine music industry was a P2 billion thriving industry before the vicious tentacles of music piracy choked it to near collapse starting year 2000'.
