ABSTRACT
(a) Leonard Welsted, extract from a letter to Pope printed among the ‘Testimonies of Authors’ prefixed to The Dunciad (1743), Corresp., iii. 355–6. Pope commented, ‘Mr. LEONARD WELSTED thus wrote to the unknown author, on the first publication of the said Essay [on Man].’ Welsted's letter dates from 12 March 1733. His praise would have been tempered had he known the author (see Nos 4, 75).
