ABSTRACT

Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.1200 is the hazard communication standard, the intent of which is to “ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are evaluated and that information concerning their hazards is transmitted to employers and employees”. A large portion of the hazard communication standard focuses on the actual use of chemicals in the workplace. The written hazard communication program must be made available to employees. The chemical inventory may be maintained as one resource for an entire facility or it may be maintained as fragmented sections for each department or work area. Manufacturers, importers, and distributors are responsible for ensuring that all hazardous chemical containers leaving their workplace are properly labeled, tagged, or marked. Information required in such labeling is to include: Identity of the hazardous chemicals, Hazard warnings and Name and address of the chemical manufacturer, importer, or other responsible party.
