ABSTRACT

The safe shipment and transportation of hazardous materials is the fundamental goal of the Department of Transportation’s Hazardous Materials Regulations and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. This is shown in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations by the various peripheral requirements, such as the maintenance of a commercial driver’s license to ensure that hazardous materials shipments are carried out safely. This chapter discusses the general points of regulations affecting hazardous materials shipments and packagings. If hazardous materials are to be shipped internationally, the shipper must identify all of the appropriate regulatory influences to ensure compliance. Though this hazardous material is technical in nature, drivers should be made aware of the general requirements of these regulations. Because it is the driver’s responsibility to ensure that the load being carried is safe, the driver will need to be aware of requirements that impact the shipment involved.
