ABSTRACT

The healthcare system is comprised of a set of interconnected healthcare facilities with service providers aiming to provide healthcare services to communities and improve their health status. It includes a mechanism for governance and management for these facilities. There are two broad dimensions of healthcare: hospital-based care and public health/community-based care. In many countries, governments establish and own most healthcare services, both hospital-based and community-based. In some countries, private organizations including corporate hospitals, charitable organizations, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and civil society supplement the efforts of government. A public health system or government-owned system comprises both hospitals and the public health system. In the private sector, medical care is provided by a variety of players. They can be single practitioner clinics, who may be qualified or unqualified, practitioners of other systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda, homeopathy, acupuncture, and so on. In some places, charitable organizations and NGOs supplement the efforts of the public health system in providing community-based services.
