ABSTRACT
Much has already been written about hegemonic masculinity within what might be referred to as critical studies on men and masculinities (CSMM). Today it could be argued that hegemonic masculinity is the most important concept in CSMM. However, from its theoretical beginnings, hegemonic masculinity has been underpinned by the theory of hegemony. This chapter takes hegemonic masculinity as a starting point and applies a historical and critical lens to look into the theoretical beyond and, in particular, the alignment to a materialist or foundationalist understanding and then its expansion as a transnational phenomenon.
