ABSTRACT

After giving the fascinating story of helium liquefaction and the discovery of superconductivity by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, this chapter has presented the applications, demand, resource and supplies of helium.

The discussion concludes that the concern of helium shortage due to the growing imbalance between supply and demand is unlikely to go away soon. However the helium shortage situation is expected to gradually ease along with more expansion activities to boost the helium production, more discovery of helium resource, more infrastructures of helium recovery and liquefaction facilities, and above all further development and usages of cryocoolers.

Possible solutions are discussed at the end of this chapter. Elimination of using liquid helium with cryocooler seems to be the final answer.
