ABSTRACT

Factors assisting the ‘greening’ of companies have been identified, and these have been classified as ‘internal’ and ‘external’ factors. From the literature, a number of other aspects of multinationalism which facilitate the ‘greening’ of industry can also be identified. Several broad classifications of ‘external’ factors assisting companies to succeed as ‘green’ manufacturers have been identified. Another company highlighted the importance of membership of industry-based groups such as the Plastics and Chemical Industries Association which has involved the company in the ‘Responsible Care’ program and has provided valuable guidance and information. Growing community environmental awareness, both in Australia and overseas, has been an important factor in the successful ‘greening’ of industry. As well as being motivating factors, environmental regulations and economic pressures have also been identified as factors which have assisted companies to succeed as ‘green’ businesses. Product-related factors were also seen as important in the success of companies.
