ABSTRACT
'Cold callers' trying to sell products often fail because they have only one basic way of presenting their materials. The more sophisticated, and successful, sales people have a range of techniques which they use depending on the circumstances and reactions of the potential purchaser. Similarly, in teaching, effective teachers adjust their style to individual learners. Fitting interest levels of children with the demands of particular activities is one way in which some children can be given greater access to the National Curriculum. In addition, specific parallel tasks can be planned so that, although the learning target is the same for a range of children, the means of promoting it reflect different interest levels. Many teachers vary the level of talk, especially questions, directed to different children in ways which are intuitively tuned in to the varying ability levels of the children.
