ABSTRACT

The herbivorous insects require only morphological or physiological modifications of morphology, physiology, and behavior of a typical terrestrial insect to utilize their food source and make themselves difficult for potential predators to capture. Some herbivorous insects belonging to families consisting mainly of terrestrial species are specialized for living and feeding on the emergent parts of aquatic vegetation. The relationship between the aquatic plants and their habitats sometimes require insects that live on the plants to develop subtle adaptations to their floating habitats. The introduction of new crops to Southeast Asia will definitely result in the eventual introduction of insects that eat them. However, most of the pests will very likely be terrestrial species that feed on terrestrial crops. With the introduction of the rice variety called "miracle rice" at the beginning of the 1970s came the perceived need to introduce various pesticides. The new variety allegedly lacked the natural resistance to pests and diseases that the traditional varieties possessed.
