ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates narratives of the last two groups of students identified by the cluster analysis, namely the Clandestine Readers and the Outsiders. The male-dominated group the Clandestine Readers were characterized by the highest score for books and reading and then conversely defined by a significantly low score for the social aspects of reading. Students in this cluster indicated the highest level of enjoyment for books and reading, articulating very specific preferences for reading genres, defining themselves in terms of particular categories of books. This high level of enjoyment was expected based on the cluster solution, with the interviews confirming and supporting the quantitative findings. The Clandestine Readers indicated a significantly high level of enjoyment for personal reading and conversely a significantly low negative score for the social aspects of reading, including associated activities such as visiting the library, reading to a teacher and reading to a friend.
