ABSTRACT

Virtual reality (VR) is rapidly becoming more widely adopted by various industries, and virtual content is just as rapidly becoming available for consumers. However, there is a lack of guidelines and standards for VR content to be held to in terms of experiential design. This chapter discusses the key experiential elements of users’ experiences with immersive journalism, particularly in the case of a virtual museum application. It presents a user study of this application and introduces a model based on the results that details the most crucial user experience components for designing VR content. Immersive journalism presents a story from a first-person perspective that fosters a connection by allowing users to actually experience the events themselves. Therefore, storytelling is an integral piece to creating an engaging and memorable experience of immersive content. As VR becomes a more widely used medium for learning and experiencing, new VR use cases are being explored more and more.
