ABSTRACT
Chapter 2 illustrates how British beloved singer Cheryl has moulded Geordie into something new. Through her growing popularity, she has come to enact a characterological figure, i.e. a sort of prototypical figure stereotypically linked to Geordie speech and cultural repertoire, and her positive traits have gradually ‘transferred’ to the Geordie variety. So Geordie has been de-linked from low class and come to index high status: that of a ‘cool persona’.
