ABSTRACT

This chapter will offers an overview of the internationalisation of higher education which has been developing in the USA, focusing in particular in the last decade. Consideration will be given in particular to the successes of the internationalisation process, and the lessons learned. The chapter draws on research undertaken from national surveys across a wide range of institutions across the USA. We consider what is meant by success, as the meaning of this term differs depending on whether one takes an instrumentalist (or output) perspective or an intercultural learning/dialogue (or outcome) approach. The chapter will discuss the (lack of) relationship between the concepts of internationalisation and diversity in the US, the work of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) and other national bodies. We shall consider the usefulness of the concept of intercultural dialogue for understanding processes of internationalisation in the US context. Some examples of inspirational practice will be offered.
